Plants that do not look cold

There are some intrepid people who resist even when temperatures plummet. Ideal for keeping color and scents in your garden, balcony or window sill.

Daffodils. From early December, daffodils bloom. Miniature version in yellow and orange, large round corollas, single or double, cream, bright yellow or two-tone ... There are many varieties and, moreover, their smell embalmed as soon as the sun caresses them. Only good points.

Hyacinths and irises. Blue and pink hyacinths, crimson, and cream remain fresh for more than three weeks on the outside support of a window. It's way longer than their flowering time indoors! The mini-iris also bloom at this time, but it's useless to hope to enjoy it all winter. These flowers only last for a fortnight.

The hellebores. Solid foliage, huge bunches of white corollas, light green, peach, purple or black, the hellebores are the stars of winter. For them to bloom until spring, we choose its plants. The bouquets must be erect and the root ball must fill the pot. For the hellebores to bloom from year to year, they are repotted in citrus potting soil and the plants are placed in partial shade rather than full sun.

Primroses. Corollas extra-large, bright colors ... A priori we would not give expensive primroses during the winter. And yet! Primroses bloom until April and measure at most 3 cm high. To pamper them, we repot them in nutritious soil and we favor soft colors or two-tone garnets ... to enjoy an exceptional flowering!

The maturities. While dry, these succulents hold up to -5 ° C and bloom from early winter to spring. Undemanding, the maturerias grow in any soil and bloom as soon as they are exposed in full light. Top, even if we do not have the green thumb.

The right location for the flowers during the winter

When winter comes, we worry about our flowers. They have been carefully planted, watered, and pruned for months (sometimes years), and sometimes a rough season is enough for all our hopes of seeing them bloom again are destroyed. How to care for the most fragile plants when temperatures drop? They are installed on windows facing south and west that benefit from a particularly mild micro-climate, especially in cities where the cold is more moderate than in the countryside because buildings and streets store the heat. For the chilly plants, only one solution: they are installed inside . But beware of the heating and the room without light: most species need a minimum of natural light and moisture to continue to grow.
