Birth of a fashion accessory



Surprising as it may seem, the Ray Ban find their origin in the universe of the American army.

The beginnings of their creation are in 1927, at the request of a lieutenant wishing protective glasses and ultra protective, suitable for pilots often blinded by the strong light encountered at altitude.

Ten years later, the Ray Ban brand is born after first officiating for the fighter pilots of the US Air Force.

Very quickly, movie stars notice the fashion potential of these sunglasses and adopt them to accessorize their look with originality and shift, while retaining the glamorous touch essential to their star aura.

The Wayfarer model: a fulgurating fame

Created in 1952, the Wayfarers stand out from other Ray Ban glasses because of their thick plastic frame, a touch of originality rivaling the classic metal frames.

Very soon, many stars adopt them, like Audrey Hepburn who feminizes them in the film " Diamonds on the couch" in 1961, and opens the ball has a broad democratization of this new model.

A new era opens for Ray Ban which quickly becomes the fetish brand of all the headliners.

Timeless and uncontrollable

Despite a brief decline in the 1970s, Wayfarers, spotted on James Dean, Bob Dylan, or Marilyn Monroe, regained success from the 1980s on.

His presence on the screens is inevitable, all the heroes of the seventh art wear it: The "Blues Brothers", the young Macaulay Culkin of "Mom, I missed the plane", Tom Cruise in "Risky Business" .. These films, popular success, make it a definitely cult accessory, conveying the image of a America as cool as glamor.

And the stars do not deprive themselves of spinning them out of turning trays, pushing the public to rush on the latest models to resemble their idols.

An ever-present success

Since this renewed interest, the Wayfarers have reached the status of the best-selling glasses in the world, sharing this title with a very few other pairs that have marked the history of fashion.

Ray Ban knows how to surfer this success by constantly renewing its fetish model: foldable glasses for simplicity, redesigned finer for an assured elegance, or declined in multiple colors and customizable designs for more originality.

One of the last little ones? For the faithful always and the enthusiasts, Ray Ban even creates models in limited edition, for a unique and inimitable look.
