Where does the essence of birch come from?
The tree, white birch, is found in the wild in Northern Europe and Russia. To be integrated into the fragrances, the bark of the tree is distilled and then washed in an alkaline solution, that is to say its pH (hydrogen potential) is greater than 7.

Why do perfumers use birch in their compositions?
The essence of birch bark is exploited to obtain notes of leather in fragrances, especially masculine. The nose appreciates the essence of birch for its hot smells, acres, smoke, to the limited of the burnt, tarred and obviously leather. It gives the olfactory impression of a wood fire. Its chords work very well with woody notes and ferns.

On the men's side, Cartier, in 2009 launched "La Treizième Heure", a woody and chypre fragrance that blends birch essence with vanilla sweetness, patchouli, leather intensity and smoky notes. Dior has released this year, in its private collection, "Cuir Cannage", a composition that goes both to men and women. It is an exceptional juice which is certainly not within the reach of all the scholarships. It subtly combines the delicacy of flowers with the strength of leather. You can find in the head note the orange blossom, a soft heart made of jasmine, and a background built on leather notes based on birch essence. At Guerlain, the brand's inescapable, the famous oriental fragrance "Habit rouge", integrates birch essence in background notes, combined with labdanum, ambergris, patchouli, tonka bean, vanilla and cedar.
