European Waste Reduction Week: 12,000 actions in 23 countries

Reducing our waste, giving a second life to products and recycling materials : here are the 3 main areas of awareness of the European Waste Reduction Week which takes place from November 22 to 30, 2014. These are actions that may seem trivial but are yet far from it. According to calculations made by ADEME (French Agency for the Environment and Energy Management) from the tonnages of garbage cans (excluding green waste) collected by local authorities, each year a Frenchman produces on average 354 kg of household waste.

And as the period is propitious, in 2014 the focus of the European Waste Reduction Week is of course on food waste. In addition to the 12 000 actions organized from 22 to 30 November across the 23 participating European countries, the European Week for Waste Reduction is coordinating a cleaning day across Europe. This strong moment of mobilization is expected the weekend of May 8, 2015. European citizens, your shovels and gloves!

Recycling waste: France late

The latest report from the EEA (European Environment Agency) on recycling and household waste collection points to major differences between European countries. 5 countries have already passed the 50% mark of recycled waste (Austria 63%, Germany 62%, Belgium 58%, the Netherlands and Switzerland 51%). France is struggling to catch up: only 37% of our waste is, for the moment, recycled. A statistic that does not yet allow France to be in the European average of 40%.
