Make sleeping baby in a cardboard box is a Finnish tradition that dates from the twentieth century. Today, the custom is exported beyond the borders ... and even landed on the French market.

How cardboard boxes save babies

When the baby box appeared in Finland in 1938, its aim was to reduce the infant mortality rate. At the time, these cardboard boxes, at the bottom of which is installed a mattress, and which contain all the necessary for an infant, are thus distributed free to the future mothers in need. And the result is at the height: by improving prevention and hygiene, baby boxes can reduce the infant mortality rate in Finland significantly from 10% to 0.3%.

Why do we adopt it?

The strengths of this cardboard cradle are numerous. Less expensive than a 'classic' cradle, the baby box is no less safe. Poor sleeping has a real connection with the risk of sudden infant death. By providing a closed and comfortable space, the baby box ensures the safety of the newborn. In addition, you can move this extra bed easily and thus move it from the baby's room to that of parents as needed. But do not see an alternative to the crib, these boxes are only suitable for the first months of baby: when he starts to shake and bang in the walls, it is usually a sign that he is ready to change sleeping system. The only small flaw of this invention? Its price, relatively high. Even if the baby box is now filled with a multitude of baby accessories (from the body to the bottle) it is hard to put the price when we know that we will use it for a few months!

Another good idea for Nordic countries !

In France, several companies already market baby boxes:
